Mission Team

Our mission team has returned from their week in at the Empire Grove Campmeeting in East Poland, Maine.  Members of the team were Warren and Wendy Halstead, Kim Page, Graham Pellegrino, Tim Croteau, Casey and Charlie Dwane and Pastor Lori.

Below you can find daily news and pictures from the team.

July 14.  Departure Day.  The team stopped to take a break en route East Poland in Kennybunkport, ME. Nice moose!

Arrived!  The Empire Grove grounds are beautiful!  The building the team is staying in is nice (but a bit hot).

At Vespers EVERYONE spoke and shared why we are on this mission trip.

July 15.  Work Begins!  Today Tim, Graham, Charlie, Warren and Kim helped dismantle a ramp which will go back on the camp church.  Wendy, Casey and Lori painted screens.

July 16.  The team started the morning breakfast with prayer & blueberry muffins brought to them - they were delicious!

Casey and Wendy painted screens and worked on getting the porch clean before the team painted it.

The boys painted the church wall & reassembled the access ramp behind the church.  They had to level the ground so the incline is only one inch up for each linear foot (see, boys, geometry and slope does have application in the real world!)

July 17. The team is trying to get the screens scraped, painted and back on the building they are sleeping in to cool it down.

It was HOT this morning so Warren had a much deserved break at lunch.  The rest of the youth ate and relaxed before scrapping & painting windows.

The team takes some down time each day to go to the local lake to cool off and have a swim.  It is VERY refreshing!

Tonight there was a pot luck with the folks who live at Empire Grove Methodist Camp.  There were many delicious dishes!  Pastor Kay & her husband Wally (also a pastor) celebrated their wedding anniversary at the dinner.

There was a dramatic display of lightning in the night sky tonight, and several of the youth (Charlie Dwane, Tim Croteau Graham Pellegrino & Casey Dwane) turned out to watch.

July 18.  Today the team went into Lewistown for a side trip and passed waterfalls which were absolutely beautiful!

Tim & Graham worked on the playground set the team was asked to assemble.  Warren and Casey worked longer on the assembly and will continue on Friday.

In the evening was a bonfire with hot dogs, s'mores and banana boats.  The team played whiffle ball until the mosquitoes drove them inside (the mosquito is Maine’s state bird).

July 19. Last full day!  The team began their morning at the chapel, walking up the new ramp they rebuilt.

Today the team cleaned the lodge and the many cottages on the grounds.

Lunch time is a needed break from the heat & humidity before they faced the afternoon.

Warren, Lori, Casey and their new friend Chad continued work to put together a play set.

Lobster is inexpensive right now so the team budgeted for a lobster dinner (Warren got mussels). The youth decided to race their lobsters; watching the youth cheer on their lobsters was more fun than the race itself!

July 20: Coming Home! Pastor Lori cooked the last breakfast of eggs, ham, pancakes, cereal, lemonade, tea, coffee and wild blueberries that Kim had picked.

The final task was to complete the construction of the playground set, which turned out to be harder than it looked!

The team said their goodbyes and headed south, stopping at Gifford’s for ice cream and the LL Bean outlets for a bit of shopping.

From Pastor Lori: We arrived home about 7:30. Long drive but well worth the week and all the effort. This is one fantastic team. I would take this group anywhere! Accomplished all our projects and formed some wonderful relationships. We look forward to returning next year! We thank all the people of the Empire Grove Campmeeting Association for their hospitality and friendship. And anyone looking to do a retreat in the wonderful Maine woods - this is the place!
